The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has stated that the losses of pub and club gamblers in Australia “have almost doubled in the past six years.” The ABS report said net revenue from landbased gambling venues, including bingo parlours, “increased 86 per cent between 1996 and 2002 to a record $5.43 billion (US$3.21 billion) last financial year.”

The ABS report further indicated that gambling revenues -- excluding casinos and lotteries -- grew 16% between June, 2001 and June, 2002. The reports shows that gambling revenues surpassed the overall growth for hotels and licensed clubs by 25% over the six-year period.
