Lotteries migrate to mobile
By Paul
Diversinet Corp and Effective Solution Ltd have announced a joint venture to implement their new iLottery System. The mobile system will allow users to buy lottery tickets and place bets from their mobile phone.

The iLottery System currently supports Internet-based wagering, fixed point of sales terminals and mobile selling terminals. 'Mobile wagering has the promise of being an enormous channel for gaming operators as it allows them to reach users anytime, anywhere,' said Dr. Lee Keng Ho, Chief Executive Officer, Effective Solution Ltd.

According to a July 2002 Datamonitor report, there are currently 157 million wireless gamers worldwide. Datamonitor estimates that number will increase to 500 million by 2006 and generate $17.5 billion in wireless gaming revenues.

'Certainly wireless is the next generation of e-gaming that is looking to take hold,' says Nancy Chan-Palmateer of CryptoLogic, a Toronto-based Internet gambling software company that is now shipping its first wireless gambling products.

Another factor that will speed up mobile igaming is the price of calls. Analysts expect prices for data calls to fall further in the next few years as the mobile carriers begin to offer flat-fee data access, much as they did with voice calls.
