|Last November, Washington State began an ambitious pilot program to help pathological gamblers recover from their disease. Funded ironically from $500,000 in lottery proceeds, the project has capital to keep it alive until June this year. However, June 2003 is not long enough to treat the state’s population of pathological gamblers, and incidentally coincides with the state’s proposed expansion of gambling, allowing looser regulation on keno to help increase state revenues. |
The state has not indicated if it would be amenable to private financing of the project, but if it were that money may come from online casinos. Online casinos have been aggressively supporting problem gambling consultation ever since the Sunny Group employed “Miss Hope” to seek out and council its small pocket of potentially problematic gamblers. Since the altruistic move, other online casinos have followed suit and have implemented their own help programs. Could an online casino be the first to step to the plate and help Washington bettors? It’s not a far fetched idea.
