|According to South Africa’s National Gambling Board, gambling has grown from a R6.8bn pastime in 2001 to a R10.6bn activity within in the first 10 months of 2002. The increase is not however tagged to online betting, which is proliferating in South Africa as people continue to migrate online. The increase is in fact pegged to the addition of the mid-week lottery.|
This information comes from a recent study conducted for the National Gambling Board in an attempt to gather information to help construct amended South African gambling legislation.
NGB managing researcher Lusanda Rataemane said in an interview: 'It is probably safe to conclude that South Africa currently portrays a relatively vibrant gambling sector, making it one of the leading gambling nations in the world. 'This vibrancy has been achieved within a short time span of not more than five years. During the course of these few years, the gambling sector has shown typical characteristics of a developing gambling market with substantial volatility.'
South Africa is not only a nation of gamblers, but a locale online casinos have been eyeing as there were rumors that the country was considering opening up for online gaming licensing and operation.
