Bingo Lingo goes Bling
By staff
UK holiday firm Butlins have given Bingo a makeover – by changing the language. Out goes 1950s style rhyming slang and in come phrases like J-Lo’s bum (for US readers, bum in the UK context refers to J-Lo’s posterior), Ali G and Chicken Vindaloo. So Bang on the Drum for 71 becomes J-Lo's bum while Danny La Rue (52) becomes Chicken Vindaloo.

The new Bingo lingo was devised by popular culture professor Charlie Blake. 'Bingo calls are a barometer of 1950s Britain,' he told the paper. 'My task was to find reference points from 2003, which would have a much greater meaning to the British public today.'

Other changes include Jimmy Choo for Buckle my Shoe (32) and Gareth Gates for eight. But the most famous calls such as Two fat ladies (88) and Clickety click (66) will remain.

However, whether Blake’s idea will travel well online is another thing – few outside of the UK have heard of Gareth Gates, and Ali G is only just beginning to make headway in the US.
