|Malaysian police believed they have crippled a major 4-digit gambling syndicate which accepted bets worth up to RM4 million a week with the arrest of six suspects Wednesday.|
Johor CID Chief SAC II Tan Seng Eng said the police believed the syndicate was masterminded by a Singaporean.
'With bets reaching as high as RM4 million a week, we (police) believe that this is the biggest illegal betting ring busted in the state so far this year,' he told reporters here Thursday.
He said six women including a Singaporean were nabbed in the 5:30 pm police raid. Tan said the six women, aged between 25 and 32, were busy accepting bets from the syndicate's clients when the police raided the condominium.
Police seized various equipment including computers, fax machines, recorders and telephones worth some RM150,000 from the condominium. Malaysia is currently in the midst of a crackdown on VCDs and gambling activities.
