|This week certain groups have criticized Hong Kong's proposal to legalize betting on soccer matches. The government however hopes that legalised gambling will curb illegal bookmakers and boost tax revenues. The Hong Kong government has said its gambling proposal would raise an estimated 1.5 billion Hong Kong dollars a year in extra tax revenue.|
A major part of the problem is that soccer in Hong Kong is hugely popular with kids and teenagers and there are worries that youngsters could be drawn into gambling. Those in support of gambling on soccer will tell you that many people in Hong Kong are already gambling and flocking to casinos and it is best that they are gambling legally rather than following the not so legal options.
You can already bet in casinos in Hong Kong. Why not bet on soccer too? Hopefully legal soccer betting will quash illegal betting in Hong Kong. The major casinos where locals bet are operated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, a non-profit charity that would end up handling the soccer betting anyway. Hong Kong's legislative council is currently considering the proposal. We shall wait and see.
