Smoke ban hits Aussie casinos

Another advantage of wagering over the internet – freedom from both health zealots and health hazards!

A smoking ban instituted at all gaming venues in Victoria, which will spread to New South Wales and probably Queensland, has hit revenues. Lower tourist numbers linked to the SARS out break aren't helping either, nor has the National Australia Bank’s decision to remove all of its ATMs from the locations. (Where have they put them, pubs?) Unfortunately, internet gambling is still illegal in Australia, despite banks and credit card companies issuing strong statements regarding their unwanted role as unofficial policemen.

Tabcorp, whose shares have fallen by 15 percent over the past year, has responded by creating smoking rooms and allowing customers to reserve machines during breaks. But face it, who wants to get up and move to a confined wind tunnel of cinders when you’re on a roll?
