|A congressman who wants to prohibit Nevada sportsbooks from taking bets on college games said Wednesday he does not expect his bill to gain momentum from this week's overwhelming vote in the House against Internet gambling. |
Rep. Tom Osborne, R-Neb., said he does not see a strong connection between Internet gambling and his measure to ban betting on amateur sports events. The House voted 319-104 Tuesday to outlaw payments by credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers for offshore online wagers.
Osborne, who coached three national championship football teams at the University of Nebraska, acknowledged his bill has made little progress since being introduced. 'My experience as a coach would hardly let me do anything but support this legislation,' he said. 'But you know, I think very frankly, the gambling industry has made a lot of (financial) contributions in key places and it's kind of hard to get this thing going.'
