|A gambling ring run by the Bonanno organized crime family “taking in $20M a year” was busted Monday evening despite the efforts of 93-year-old Rosa Baccalore to flush gambling records down the john.|
Investigators executed search warrants in Manhattan, the Bronx, West Babylon and East Meadow, arresting eight men. More arrests are expected, claimed District Attorney Thomas Spota.
The gambling ring rented a 'wire room' - where bets are placed before being transmitted to an off-shore location - in the home of Rose Baccalore, 93, in the Bronx.
When investigators arrived, Spota said, Baccalore grabbed the gambling records and headed toward the bathroom. 'She was trying to ditch them,' Spota said, but she was not charged.
Like a similar operation allegedly run by the Luchese crime family in which arrests were made last year, Spota said the ring actually placed bets through a betting room in Costa Rica.
