|'Dot.kids' is intended for Web sites with content geared toward children. General registration for the '.kids' domain begins in September. |
Baltimore-based domain name registrar BulkRegister says it is currently accepting pre-registrations for the domain. It lets companies that want to protect their trademarks or their services stake out a '.kids' domain early. Any '.kids' site will have to comply with strict rules about mature content and violence.
BulkRegister says restrictions include inappropriate language, hate speech, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gambling weapons and criminal activity. The company says the idea is to create a domain that is content-appropriate for children and youth-friendly.
General registration for the new domain begins Sept. 4. In order to qualify for a pre-registration, a company must have applied for or registered a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on or before Dec. 31, 2002.
Ninety percent of the children in the United States between the ages of 5 and 17 now have access to a computer, and 65 percent of those 10 to 13 years old use the Internet.
