Oz Unions Blast Automated Pokies
By staff
AUSTRALIA'S gaming workers' union has warned of massive job losses and a possible increase in gambling when new automated poker machines are introduced there. The Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union (LHMU) said the high-tech machines, which require no staff assistance to pay out winnings, were already being flown to Australia from the US.

The machines print receipts which winners can then take to an ATM-like machine for instant payouts.

'The poker machine attendants and cashiers in the hundreds of venues across the country won't have much in the way of job prospects if the industry has its way on this issue,' LHMU assistant national secretary Tim Ferrari said.

'The so-called community oriented clubs will have to answer to their neighbourhoods if they use these high-tech machines to kill off more local jobs.'
