The Sydney Morning Herald, today reported that anyone with a fairly new mobile phone could bet, gamble, game with just a dial away. SportOdds an Internet sports betting firm, which is currently in talks with the major mobile phone companies would be among the first offer such betting services in Australia.
According to Mick Robbins, Marketing Manager of SportOdds, ‘Phone companies see it as one of the new and exciting services that will be key drivers in selling more new handsets’.
Until May this year, 90 per cent of SportOdds bets were placed via the Internet but after the soft launch of the M-bet mobile phone service two months ago some customers have completely converted to using the service on their mobile phones.
While casino-style gambling is banned in Australia, online betting on sports events is legal, under licence. The same legislation will cover mobile phones. Dany Falconer Flint, of the Lifeline problem gambler support group, said mobile phone betting 'could present very big problems. They run on impulse betting and provide yet another form of 24/7 access to gambling services.'

Graham Chalker, chief executive of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, said mobile phone gambling and adult content services had been identified as issues requiring community consultation and strong policy setting, but that process had not yet begun.
