|Edmonton, Canada police are warning local business professionals about a poker playing con game that has surfaced in the city. According to the mounties, 'Several local businessmen including high profile realtors, contractors and private business owners have complained that they were recently lured into what they thought was an impromptu poker game among potential clients.|
In every case, the complainants report that they were contacted at their place of business (likely from local or internet advertisements) and asked to attend a business meeting with some potential clients. The complainant arrives at the meeting, usually held at a hotel restaurant, to find the 'clients' involved in a poker game to pass the time while waiting for a partner who is late.
The players, using toothpicks or sugar packets as gambling tokens, invite the complainant to sit in while one of the partners goes to the washroom. During the course of the game the complainant learns that the tokens are worth real money, and that he stands to win a significant amount of cash due to a streak of good luck. Of course, the good luck turns sour and the complainant ends up losing several thousand dollars to the other players.' Police say they have no doubt this is a very slick operation orchestrated by travelling con artists.
