BT takes you Tech

British Telecommunications, not a name normally associated with the gaming industry, hit the expo trail hard in Las Vegas this week where they reviled their newest smartcard technology. The technology, represented by BT eLocations, is set to take advantage of home turf changes in gaming regulation once they take effect in the UK.

The secure Smart Membership Cards use biometric testing to authenticate each customer by their fingerprints as they enter casinos.

The technology also allows customers to buy gaming credit, issue and redeem gaming chips without the need for cash to change hands on the gaming floor. The associated back office technology tracks chips to prevent theft or fraud, monitors the location of customers and provides invaluable marketing information about customers’ playing levels and preferences.

While great for the terrestrial casino industry, the online casino industry can certainly find applications for this new form of secure ecash and player identification. If the system works in the land-based casinos, it is not inconceivable that its rollout to online casinos would follow.
