According to Dr. Zammit Maempel, chairman of the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority, Malta is on the brink of releasing publicly its draft legislation for online gambling. Malta is one of several European nations that are either considering licensing online casinos from their jurisdictions or have already done so. However, Malta still has an opportunity to be one of the early adapters of online gaming legislation, providing a potentially colossal increase in foreign investment in Mediterranean island.
However, prior to releasing a final draft legislation the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority will be considering comments from all interested parties. The government of Malta has no intention of overregulating its operators beyond necessity, however Malta is keen to provide strict player protection in its regulation will eliminate any risk of money laundering.
'This consultation exercise showed in no uncertain terms that there would be widespread support for the government's approach in this field of gambling, not only from those who would be seeking to take advantage of the commercial opportunities that would be created, but also from those who are concerned about the proliferation of potentially underregulated, non-Maltese gambling sites,' Dr Zammit Maempel said. |
