College football office investigated
By staff
The University of Washington’s football team office is at the center of allegations of gambling. An investigation is being carried out as to whether team coach Keith Gilbertson and other coaches were members of an office pool in years other than 1999, which UW officials have admitted. NCAA and Pac-10 investigators interviewed staff last week, and Gilbertson admitted he had talked to the investigators, without giving details of the conversation.

Gilbertson is on the record as saying he admitted being a participant in one pool in 1999, but as for any other pools, he said only: “I might have been in another one. I don't remember.”

Gilbertson was appointed head coach in July this year, after having been an assistant at UW from 1999. Investigators are reported to have found evidence of other pools however, and it is questions about the other pools that formed the basis the meeting with Gilbertson.

The NCAA's investigation at UW is thought to be focused on whether gambling was endemic to the Washington athletic department.
