Uthingo.co.za warns of lottery scams

Lottery operator Uthingo.co.za has warned the public not to respond to unsolicited emails from organizations, who claim to be affiliated with the South African National Lottery.

Dawid Muller, Uthingo's corporate services director, warns, 'Certain organisations sent people emails claiming that they have won prizes. Emails are sent to individuals at random claiming that they have won prizes in promotional draws.'

'Individuals are then expected to pay an administration fee to access the winnings,' he adds.

Uthingo Management (Pty) Ltd was the only company licensed to operate the National Lottery in South Africa and no other company may run lottery promotions in the country without permission of the regulator, the National Lotteries Board.

Muller says, 'At the moment Uthingo.co.za is offering Lotto and Wina Manje Scratch Cards. The only way to play these games was to buy a ticket from an accredited National Lottery outlet.'

The operators also added that Uthingo does not extend gaming opportunities to other countries. It is currently the only company or licensee selling lottery tickets via online terminals installed at retail outlets in South Africa.
