Smoking Ban Could Compromise Casino Revenue
By earl
The Associated Press reports that a new state law in Maine, which goes into effect January 1, 2004, will ban smoking from the proposed $650 million casino in Sanford, Maine. The complex, purpose-built for gamblers, will be regarded under the law as any other building open to the public, in which smoking is banned.

The Sanford, Maine casino is thought to become the only smoke-free casino in the country. Critics of the new law fear that the total smoking ban will hurt business and generate less tax revenue for Maine.

However, others argue that more and more customers, gamblers included, want more non-smoking facilities. They also cite the fact that smokers are now conditioned to smoking outside when smoking is taboo.
