|The traditional British pastime of wagering on the probability of a white Christmas looks tempting this year with William Hill offering 5-1 odds for Manchester, London, Glasgow and Cardiff, and 4-1 for chilly Aberdeen. Everyone dreams of the white Christmases they used to know, yet, astonishingly, you would have to go back to 1895 for the last time London was blanketed in snow on Christmas Day. However, all is not lost, as bookies have paid out four years in the last seven for the appearance what can at least be described as ‘snowflakes.’ Predictably, though, rain is the bookies’ favourite; WH offering a slightly dispiriting 8-11 for all the above cities.|
The other great preoccupation of British Yuletide gamblers is speculating upon which dismal offering will be number one in the U.K pop charts. WH is playing it safe with the imminent UK Pop Idol Winner a hot favourite. However, at 7-2, we dearly hope it’s The Darkness. Ozzy and Kelly Osborne’s duet has plummeted in odds since Ozzy’s regrettable quad-bike crash, but the sympathy vote could make them a fanciable outsider.
