|The Racing Association of New York is expected to withhold its signal to Attheraces in order to block the satellite channelís live coverage of horse racing from major New York tracks, the Thoroughbred Times announced on Wednesday. Itís all part of an effort to stop gamblers from betting on its races through Betfair and other betting exchanges. |
While NYRA acknowledges that Attheraces is in no way affiliated with betting exchanges, it believes that having no access to live pictures will effectively restrict punters from placing bets. Although both parties will lose money as a result of the decision, NYRA believe it is a price worth paying, following voices within the association calling for a more stringent protection of intellectual property.
Bill Nadar, a NYRA Vice President, has said that the betting exchange concept is 'a lot like the music industry [where] file sharing helped certain segments grow, but that doesn't mean people don't deserve to be compensated for their work.'
