When Cricket Is Not Cricket

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) had been “bracing for a substantial increase in illegal betting activity -- involving hundreds of millions of dollars -- for each game of Australia's best-of-three finals series against India,” which began last Friday.

Jeff Rees, ACSU general manager and chief investigator, said that illegal bets in Mumbai alone “could approach the estimated $500 million (US$384.77 million) wagered on last year's World Cup final.”

The real threat to cricket, Rees added, was the threat of “would-be corrupters attempting to contrive results,” a threat which the general manager regarded as serious.
