Tax On Punters Scrapped In The U.K

Saturdays world cup qualifier may have been a hair-raising experience for many reasons, but automatic qualification wasn’t the only thing for sports fans to celebrate. The match was the first England game where fans could place a bet without having to pay the nine percent tax previously levied on all wagers in the U.K.

The English Government have scrapped the tax on players for a new scheme where 15 percent is taken from the gross betting profits of bookmakers. The new policy came into action last Friday.

Ladbrokes said that the new scheme would issue in a new ’golden age’ for the industry, and the growing popularity of sports betting means that the world cup could be the biggest sports event ever in terms of betting.
