|Online betting companies betandwin.com, Expekt, Globet, and Unibet, have teamed up to form the European Betting Association (EBA), an organization dedicated to the establishment of an open market for betting within the European Union (EU). The EBA, an independent, non-profit association based in Brussels, will be a unified voice to demand a level playing field for all betting companies throughout the EU. The stated objectives are: |
Freedom of establishment without nationalistic or monopolistic barriers;
The right for an operator licensed in one EU country to offer its services in all EU countries.
The EBA says it will build contacts and dialogue with organizations such as the European Parliament, the European Commission, national governments, regulatory institutions, consumer organizations and other interested parties.
A statement from the EBA released last week said: “The recent Gambelli and Lindman cases in the European Court of Justice show that the European Union allows the freedom of services for the online betting industry. We believe that Europe should take a leading role in developing a competitive and regulated environment in very much the same way as it has for other industries such as telecoms. We have united to form EBA in order to speak with a single voice and make this happen.”
Founder members betandwin.com, Expekt, Globet, and Unibet, are looking for new members from major European Internet bookmakers to bolster its credibility with the European regulatory bodies.
Betandwin released a statement saying the organization wants to work with legislators to craft new EU online gambling laws, to establish an ethical guidelines for the industry including protection of minors, and to push for consistent access to cross-EU markets. The association also seeks to use a recent European Court of Justice ruling to challenge states’ protectionism of state-run lotteries.
