Openwave and SurfControl team up to manage content

Openwave Systems, a leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, has announced that it is teaming up with SurfControl, which provides web and email filtering systems, to provide mobile operators with management and monitoring abilities over content accessed on their mobile phones.

Openwave and SurfControl will enable the operators to block access to illegal mobile Internet sites and content or sites deemed inappropriate to under age users. This covers sites with adult content or pay-per-view.

In the UK mobile operators have signed up to a self-regulatory code of practice. This means that content will be governed by the operators and online gaming sites won’t have instant access.

Stephen Timms, UK Communications minister, comments, ‘New technology introduces significant benefits and opportunities, but it can also bring new concerns and we must ensure that safeguards are in place to protect those who are vulnerable, such as children.'
