|Draft regulations were passed earlier this week to allow gaming on Taiwan’s offshore Islands such as Kinmen and Penghu. The revisions to the gambling laws are intended to help stimulate the economies of these small offshore locations.|
Chen Ching-pao, a KMT legislator from Kinmen has proposed a majority vote from the island’s residents should decide the final decision. The Islanders will vote on whether to implement the revisions themselves, and can also vote to abolish gambling in the same manner.
Should plans go ahead lawmakers are intending to take 10 percent of the gross profits of the casino operators for local government and offshore construction funds. There is also a stipulation which states that 50 percent of casino employees must be local residents.
