|Sporting Options, the UK-based online betting exchange has reportedly been hit by a denial of service (DOS) in the ongoing assault against online bookies affecting more than 15,000 customers. |
The cyber extortionists generated a flood of spurious data traffic, hitting the website, with more than 2 million connections per second, disabling the site for nearly 48 hours, in an
attack timed to coincide with Britain's biggest betting race -- the Grand National -- and the FA Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Manchester United.
Law officials say the casino operators were threatened about the disruption of the site unless 40,000 Euros was sent via Western Union. ‘We ignored these demands. The matter has now been turned over to Britain's National Hi-Tech Crime Unit for investigation. We can assure our subscribers that their personal details remain safe despite the attack, which did not affect the integrity of its site,’ said a Sporting Options customer service representative.
The site has now been restored to normal operation after remedial security action by Sporting Options and its ISP.
Other major online bookies such as William Hill, Totalbet and UKbetting and several sites have experienced similar attacks.
