BT Highlights Case for Gaming Investment in UK
By staff
May 25 2004, Las Vegas, USA: British Telecommunications plc (BT), one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, is at the Gaming Technology Summit in Las Vegas this week to promote the UK as an international destination for gaming investment and BT’s products and expertise in the sector. BT will be both sponsoring and speaking at the event.

John Campbell, Vice President of Business Development at BT eLocations, BT’s inward investment unit, will talk in the ‘Wireless Technology’ conference session at 1.00 pm on May 26th.

He will look at how the emerging wireless technologies, such as Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and Bluetooth, are being applied in the gaming sector, the potential for growth, cost implications and other barriers to wide-scale deployment. John will also introduce findings into the UK leisure and gaming sector from recent independent research. He will be speaking alongside Pete Miller, Managing Director of Immediant Corporation.

Many predict that the opening up of the UK gaming industry – the result of new legislation expected to come before Parliament in late 2004 or early 2005 - will enable companies to open Las Vegas-style casinos and online gaming operations and will encourage widespread international investment.

With over 300 successful international investments behind it, BT has an outstanding track record in bringing international companies to the UK. In addition, as evidence of their leading position within Europe, BT has recently won the Frost & Sullivan 2004 European Data Communication Service Provider of the Year Award - a recognition of its resilient, secure, high-speed and high quality communications products and services.

BT’s services and products, ideally suited to today’s modern gaming company, include:

Electronic Customer Relationship Management (eCRM) solutions - BT is one of Europe’s largest eCRM operators;

A Global Internet Protocol (IP) Network solution providing state-of-the-art, 24 by 7 secure connectivity as well as round-the-clock vulnerability alerts and intrusion detection– essential to both the land-based and online gaming industries;

A wide range of retail and wholesale wireless services from Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) to wireless broadband solutions, offering high-speed mobile data connectivity for customers who require remote access to casinos and online gaming sites;

Online payment services providing secure links with all the major international credit and UK debit cards. Every payment processed is checked for validity and availability of funds and is the perfect solution for the online gaming industry to ensure the safety and speed of transactions that the customer demands whilst reducing the opportunities for fraud within the industry.

In addition, BT are accredited disaster recovery and business continuity specialists. They also have a comprehensive portfolio of pre-equipped sites across the UK all having a dual optical fibre network infrastructure to ensure business continuity. BT is also a trusted supplier to 18 of the UK’s top 20 financial institutions and supports the UK’s largest retail operations.

BT’s John Campbell continues:

'Exciting times lie ahead for the UK gaming industry. With over two thirds of the UK’s adult population engaged in gaming and a deregulation of the industry ahead of us, the UK offers significant opportunities to international gaming companies.'

'BT’s participation at the Gaming Technology Summit shows that we are serious about this sector and, with our investment ‘know-how’ and technical expertise, expect to provide real competitive advantage to international gaming companies.'

Background to the UK Gaming Market

The UK Department of Culture is planning to bring before Parliament legislation which will see a complete overhaul of the UK gaming industry. The bill will enable companies to open Las Vegas-style casinos throughout the country, and to install large numbers of slot and electronic gaming machines.

It will also abolish the law where people, who want to gamble in casinos, have to become members 24 hours before they want to play, and will enable online gaming operators to set up online gambling sites in the UK, provided that they are licensed.

The Gaming Technology Summit

The Gaming Technology Summit is taking place at the Green Valley Ranch in Las Vegas between May 25 and 26, 2004 and is organized jointly by leading gaming industry media company Ascend Media Gaming Group and WhiteSand Consulting, a leading gaming and hospitality consulting firm.

The summit addresses the critical role of technology throughout casino hotels and the demands it places on gaming professionals to learn new skills, integrate systems and make hardware and software investment decisions. Over 300 gaming and technology professionals from across North America are expected to attend.

As well as BT, sponsors include Microsoft, PeopleSoft and Teradata. Keynote speakers include Gary Loveman, Chief Executive Officer of Harrah’s Entertainment and Glenn Bonner, Chief Information Officer of MGM MIRAGE.
