|Scottish company, Rapid Mobile, believes it has found the right formula with its new wireless gaming software, which will allow 3G-type interactive betting from existing wireless handsets. The 3G-type allows for an enormous range of data based services such as faster Internet services and video clips, and so looks to be the logical way forward for mobile gaming.|
The company, which is currently understood to be engaged in talks with various bookmakers, is initially focusing on sports betting. The technology allows customers to browse odds and make bets in real-time. Gamblers will have to have an account with a bookmaker, much like present telephone or Internet betting.
'We initially starting looking at the idea last year,' said Iain Maddox, business development director. 'At the time there was a lot of talk about mobile phone betting being the next big development in the gambling industry but no one had developed the right technology for the current generation of phones or resolved the security issues. It struck us that the various technologies we were working on…could address those problems and be used to design our own software application.'
A recent report suggested that worldwide revenues from mobile betting will reach £9bn by 2008.
