Australian gov't unlikely to make changes to i-Gambling Act

Despite pressure being applied by State governments, the Federal government of Australia is not expected to recommend any changes to current laws regarding internet gambling. There has been widespread concern in Australia about the growth of the online gambling industry, largely focusing on the revenue being taken from land based betting operators. The availability of international exchanges in Australia via the internet has also been a point of debate, with spokespeople from state governments and leading Australian betting agencies expressing concern about losses in revenue, both in terms of actual gambled revenue lost, and in terms of tax from this revenue not being able to be earned from international operators.

The Gaming Minister for the state Victoria, John Pandazopolous released the following statement regarding the availability of online gambling sites, 'If the Federal Government does nothing, then the way the law is at the moment we can't act to regulate it properly and these companies can continue to take bets overseas, where they do not pay Australian tax and where they do not pay any revenue to the local gaming industry.'

The betting on foreign exchanges is estimated to be growing at Aus$150 million a month, one fact which has prompted the review of legislation by the Federal Communications Ministry. It is expected the cabinet will consider the issue again when it next meets on July 14, but currently government sources based in the country’s capital Canberra, maintain that no changes to the current Internet Gambling Act are expected to be made.
