|New research carried out by EMC Research claims that the wireless market attained 1.5 billion subscribers at the end of last month. The report adds that the wireless boom is set to continue at this momentum for the foreseeable future; subscribers increasing in the rest of the year and through 2005 by as much as 240 million, pushing worldwide subscribers to 2 billion by 2006. |
Much of this growth is coming from emerging markets in Asia, particularly China which is expected to have 550 million wireless subscribers by 2009. India is expected to jump from the thirteenth largest market in the world to the third with 117 million.
According to the report, the US market, the second largest in the world, will have grown to 223.9 million subscribers by 2009, from 157.3 million in 2004. The report all suggests that Brazil will become a major player in the future, and by 2008 will be the fourth largest market globally, with an estimated 100 million.
