|More developments are brewing for Betfair in Australia. Following the Australian federal government’s decision to not limit the presence of off shore online betting exchanges or casinos in Australia, and open the way for Betfair and similar companies develop bases in the country, Betfair have been presented with offers from all kinds of gambling related Australian companies.|
Last week it was announced that Betfair and Packer owned media company PBL are forming an alliance. This week it has been revealed that National Rugby League Chairman David Gallop has been approached by the successful betting exchange to discuss possible co-ventures. Motivated by the possible financial gains the NRL could make by forming an alliance with an online operator, compared to the present percentages earned through co-operations with land-based operator TAB, Gallop is keen to follow up with further discussions.
Gallop released the following comments to explain his interest: 'They [Betfair] approached us and we have been talking to other sports about their position on it and gambling in general, and in particular their position regarding online betting…Our first concern is protecting the integrity of the sport. The fact is, though, our game doesn't benefit in any real financial way from gambling at present and we have to decide whether we should or not.'
