|A story from South Africa has emerged on one of the unluckiest gambling winners ever. A man in Gabon, correctly predicted the first five finishers in a race that took place on 12 September, earning himself winnings of $170,000. The unlucky part comes into play as the man is not allowed to claim his winnings thanks to his wife washing the ticket with which he won. |
He was the only person to have guessed the correct order for the first five finishers, and the bookmakers with whom he placed the bet, do know that he did so. They duplicate all bets placed, and can verify that someone did predict the outcome correctly and is entitled to the winnings. Thanks to the washing of the trousers which held the winning ticket, he is unable to produce the portion of his purchased ticket which verifies his bet, and according to their rules the bookmakers are therefore unable to pay out.
The public relations officer for the bookmaker, Hyppolite Ndong Sima, explained the situation: 'The following day, a man came to our offices, saying he had got the right order, which we already knew because we keep duplicates of all bets. Unfortunately, he was unable to present the green part of his ticket, which acts as proof, and explained that his wife had washed the trousers he had left it in...Despite his best efforts, he was unable to retrieve the slightest shred and after seven days, we had to declare the ticket lapsed, as stated in our rules.” The winnings denied the man have now been added to the carried over jackpot amount.
