|A report just published has revealed that China is now the country with the leading number of subscribers to broadband, or high speed internet services. The number of subscribers to DSL- the Digital Subscriber Line- has doubled in the last year, now totalling 13 million. One of they key drivers according to experts, has been the boom in popularity amongst the Chinese population for internet gaming and gambling. This is despite the prohibited legal status of gambling within the state, and the government’s recent attempts to censor and ban imported internet games.|
The growth in China is echoing the growth spurt seen in South Korea- a region which also enjoys gaming and gambling over the net. Like South Koreans the Chinese population are particular fans of interactive multi-player games. Growth in the broadband subscriptions in China is expected to top 20 million in another year.
Despite this growth burst and topping the table of the world's subscribers, in terms of penetration levels China still has a lot of potential. The current 13 million figure represents only 13% of all China’s phone lines, and is only accounting for 1 percent of its huge population. Compared to the 29 percent penetration level of South Korea’s broadband access, this is still a very small amount. In terms of growth and volume however, the increase and numbers reached in China in the last year are very good news for internet providers and online gambling and gaming companies alike.
