|Yusuf Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, is being hotly tipped at 7-1 by bookies William Hill for the coveted UK number one Christmas chart position. Betting on the Christmas number one is something of a tradition in Britain, and William Hill is betting that the singer’s comeback – a duet of his 70’s hit, Father and Son, with Irish singer Ronan Keating will hit the top spot.|
Islam sold over 50 million records in the 60’s and 70’s with hits such as Wild World, Morning has Broken and Moonshadow, before renouncing his commercial singing career in 1979, believing it to be forbidden by his newfound Islamic faith. He has since reconsidered, and this will be his first foray into the charts for twenty-five years.
Islam made the headlines last month when he was refused entry to the United States on ‘security grounds’. He has always strenuously denied supporting terrorist organisations.
