|A five-hour cyber attack on an internet betting site was followed by blackmailers threatening to send out child porn from the company unless it paid out 7000 euros to the extortionists this week.|
Blue Square initially received a threat on Monday. The email claimed it would start a paralysing attack on the website if the cash wasn’t paid within the hour. The company refused to pay out and were subject to a bombardment of information requests, which stopped the website from working.
The company withstood the attack, but then were phoned by the assailants who threatened to send out child porn in the companies name if their demands were not met. Blue Square has refused to give out the money, instead choosing to go public so people who may receive the emails know they are not from the company.
This new type of extortion follows increasing ability to fend off cyber attack, previously known to cripple sites. The UK Hi-Tech crime unit are taking the development very seriously and are continuing to investigate.
