RyanAir to Tempt High Rollers
By philip
Ryanair the Irish no-frills airline has announced it is looking at in-flight, mid-air gambling in an attempt to boost profit. The airline is gambling on the premise that government betting restrictions can only legally apply on terra firma. Ryanair, which already generates revenue by charging for the drinks and meals that other airlines provide for free, hopes to adapt its in-flight entertainment system to include a casino platform where passengers can gamble with credit cards. Several firms are said to have expressed an interest in the venture although no talks are as yet underway.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary, who called the commercial potential of the idea ‘enormous’, told the BBC, 'I don't know who would stop you. It is like duty free; you are in international waters.'

Ryanair is Europe’s biggest low-cost carrier and flies exclusively to European destinations, which could prove a hurdle to the scheme. Short haul flights mean that gambling restrictions would only bypassed for the relatively short time in which the plane is in the air.
