|UK Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has bowed to pressure from her fellow MP’s over the aspect of the Gambling Bill which would welcome a number of ‘super’ or ‘regional’ casinos to the country’s shores. Amidst a climate of tabloid indignation and hysteria, and a backbench revolt in which 29 Labour MPs rejected the party line by voting against the legislation, Ms Jowell has said she will seek compromise by limiting the initial number of Vegas style casinos to no more than a handful. This, compared with the 20-30 that had been previously anticipated, could act as a pilot scheme and will offer an opportunity to observe whether fears are justified or not. |
Despite government assurances that 90% of the Bill is about regulation and imposing strict controls on the industry, the notoriously reactionary Daily Mail tabloid newspaper, has been spearheading a ‘Kill the Bill’ campaign, and today trumpeted victoriously over the u-turn.
The compromise could be slipped in to the Bill this week and a possible announcement is awaited on Thursday.
