Bookmakers worry over Chelsea ‘Armageddon’
By staff
Bookmakers will face paying out massive sums if Chelsea continue their excellent start to the season and win every competition they have entered.

José Mourinho’s team edged out Fulham last night in the Carling league cup, securing a place in the semi-finals. Bookmakers make them 5/4 favouries to lift the first trophy of the season.

The west London club also sit proudly at the top of the English Premiership, a competition they have not won since 1955, and qualified easily for the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League, conceding only one goal in the process.

Chelsea are 33/1 to complete the amazing quadruple sweep, and bookies face a pay-out disaster - on the scale of Frankie Dettori’s seven-race win at Ascot in 1996 - if Chelsea achieve their target.

Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush said: 'It would be historic, and at 33/1 it's a big ask. But from our point of view it would be Armageddon if they manage to do it. It would be awful for us, terrible if they maintain their form.'
