New software to curb spam
By staff
Leading European internet portal Lycos has made new software available for the first time in attempt to hit back at websites that distribute spam.

Among those affected by the nuisance mail are internet betting sites, often a target for the spammers who hope to clog up corporate or commercial domains.

The software works by sending traffic to websites known to distribute unsolicited e-mail – thus slowing them down and making it difficult for them to operate.

Spam costs the world an estimated £14.8bn a year in lost productivity and extra security measures, while the UK Office of Fair Trading claims spam accounts for more than 60 percent of all e-mails sent.
