|Las Vegas is getting closer to its recent goal of becoming America’s first and foremost Internet gambling jurisdiction as the City Council endorsed further investigation into the possibility of bringing sin city to the WWW.|
Members of the council voted overwhelmingly to explore Internet gambling just days after renewed interest in using the city’s name for an online casino.
This should act as a wake up call to other US jurisdictions who wanted to leapfrog Las Vegas in terms of progressive gaming regulation. New Jersey is one such state, and as its assemblymen work to develop a format for an online Jersey Shore, New Jersey casino operators hope to finally match the reach of their Las Vegas brethren.
However, even if Las Vegas were to approve online gambling in 2002, it is doubtful if the city could get the State and Federal green light before 2004.
Great Britain is on a similar schedule with a target for UK online betting set at 2004-2005. Of course the UK jurisdiction of Isle of Man has already jumped onto the cyber ferry and has issued online gaming licenses to a British, an American and a South African casino operator.
