|In any sport, people always want to know who's top dog and the phenomenal rise in the popularity of Poker and the number of professional players over the last five years, has led to a craving for stats to decide just who is the ‘King of the Chips’.|
In similar vein to golf’s PGA Order of Merit or the ATP Tour rankings in tennis, European Poker now has a backer for it’s ‘league table’ after the announcement of a two-year deal by Williamhillpoker.com with PokerInEurope.com (in association with Poker Europa magazine), to back The Williamhillpoker.com European Poker Rankings.
Devised to show who are the top performing players on the European poker stage, there have been four previous winners: Pascal Perrault of France in 2000, Marcel Luske of Holland in 2001 and 2003 and Gary Bush of England in 2002. The current holder of the title for 2004 is Willie Tann of England and the current leader is Englishman Julian Thew (also sponsored by Williamhillpoker.com)
For 2005 there are currently 66 different ranking tournaments, with well over 300 individual events. To help level the playing field, and not favour players able to play in more tournaments than others, it was decided in 2003 that only a players' top ten results would count towards the overall ranking list, and their top five results would count towards the individual games lists (Holdem, Omaha and 7 Card Stud).
Jon Shoreman from PokerInEurope.com who create the European Rankings said, “The European Poker Rankings are of great interest to the players on the European Poker scene. Poker players have big egos, and everyone wants to be at the top of the list! The money added by WilliamHillPoker.com to the Rankings for 2005 now gives players an added incentive to win!'
Dan Taylor, Operations Director for Williamhillpoker.com commented; “Williamhillpoker.com is extremely proud to be the title sponsor of the European Rankings. It is wholly appropriate to be backing the leader board for the best in Europe, and will serve to further strengthen the williamhillpoker.com brand right across the continent. Williamhillpoker.com is already one of the most popular sites on the internet with players from over 150 countries and we currently sponsor a handful of professional players as well, including Julian Thew (Current williamhillpoker.com European Rankings Leader), ‘Smokin’ Steve Vladar and ‘Bad-Girl’ Xuyen Pham (the Current World Champion - Pot Limit Texa Hold'em Poker).”

NOTES FOR EDITORS
The European Poker Rankings run year-on-year and award points based on three factors: position, buy-in and number of entries.
Buy-in Euros Factor
1 - 399 2
400 - 799 3
800 + 4
# of Entries Factor
1 - 49 1
50 - 99 2
100 - 149 3
150 + 4
These three factors are multiplied together to establish a player's ranking points for each event. For example, a player who places second in a tournament that has a Euro 1,000 buy-in with 125 entries would receive 120 x 4 x3 = 1,440 Ranking Points.
The majority of the major tournaments in Europe are granted ranking status. Tournaments must consist of at least three separate events spread over no fewer than three days. Minimum buy-in for a ranking tournament is Euro 100. Some special events with prize pools in excess of Euro 250,000 are also included.
