|According to reports from Agence – France - Presse, a new gambling web site based in Norway is offering a way to help worthy causes while gambling online. But before you rush off to lay your bets – the site is open only to Norwegian residents, and only open between 7.00am and 8.00pm.|
The site, www.tivoli.no, organized by the Red Cross and the Cancer Society, offers slots, Black Jack, roulette or Scratch and Win. According to Knut Lindh, the head of the Norskespill group that runs the site, 'Sixty percent of net revenue, that is, the bets after payouts to winners, goes to humanitarian aid organisations while the remainder is split between covering costs and paying back investors'. Other beneficiaries of revenues generated by the site include the Refugee Council, Norwegian People's Aid, Save the Children, the Heart and Lung Foundation, the Sea Rescue Agency, the Health Foundation, the Association for the Handicapped and the Association for the Blind.
However, this is a not a site for the hard-core high rollers: players cannot bet more than 1,500 kroner $167 per week. Bets are limited to 20 kroner, and the most you can win is 700 kroner. In keeping with the theme of social responsibility (and also, hedging against a potential backlash from Norway’s anti-gambling lobby), Lindh adds: 'Gambling addiction is a serious problem. We don't want to do anything to encourage it and that is why we have installed safeguards'.
'We wanted something where the bets were low and the winnings were modest but numerous, something entertaining and exciting'.
