|Youbet.com says that it handled $3.4 million in online and telephone wagers on Saturday, June 11th, including the 137th running of the Belmont Stakes. The total, which was 33% higher than the $2.6 million the company handled for the same race day in 2004, was the third straight record breaking handle performance on the day of a live Triple Crown event simulcast by the nation's largest provider of Internet horse racing content.|
Youbet's advanced deposit wagering customers placed more than $9.5 million in bets on the three racing days that featured this year's Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. The last time Youbet carried all three races on its closed loop network in 2003, the company handled $6.5 million for the three racing days.
Of the $3.4 million that Youbet customers wagered on the day of the Belmont Stakes, $1.8 million was added to pari-mutuel pools at Belmont Park, a 28% increase over the amount handled for last year's race day card which included Smarty Jones' much heralded quest to become the first Triple Crown winner in more than a quarter century.
'The increase in our 2005 Belmont handle is significant,' said Youbet CEO Charles F. Champion, 'because it was achieved without the media build up that accompanied the 2003 and 2004 races when Funny Cide and Smarty Jones had chances to win the Crown.
