|Sportsbook.com has jumped the gun on political pundits by releasing odds on President Bush’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court. The lone vacancy on the nation’s top court comes in the wake of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s retirement announcement late last week. |
Sportsbook.com odds makers have prepared a list of odds on what most Washington insiders believe to be the short list of candidates. Current U.S. Attorney General and long-time Bush ally Alberto Gonzales is listed as the 6-5 favorite ahead of his closest competition, Emilio Garza with 6-1 odds.
As the Supreme Court’s first female judge, O’Connor’s departure leaves many observers wondering whether President Bush will fill her spot with another female or minority nominee. Advocacy groups across the U.S. are calling on the President to maintain the diverse make-up of the high court. Sportsbook.com lists two Hispanic Americans and three women as potential candidates. If Bush selects Gonzales or Garza, it will mark the first time in American history that a Hispanic American is nominated to the Supreme Court.
“This nomination is already taking on the air of a U.S. presidential campaign. Supporters on all sides of the political spectrum are rushing to endorse their candidate with multimillion dollar public relations campaigns,” says Alex Czajkowski, Marketing Director, Sportsbook.com. “With the stakes so high this really is becoming a very entertaining, mainstream story that is getting a lot of media attention. We’re thrilled to give our fans the chance to bet on the outcome.'
