Irish Tycoon Wins Online Poker Tournament

Billionaire Irishman, Alan Smurfit, cleaned up at the Palm Beach Casino on Sunday by winning the Classic No Limit Hold’em Tournament.

The former packaging tycoon, who sold his company for €3.9 billion, hardly needs the money, yet he expertly defeated roofing contractor David Clark to win the £51,700 prize.

“It was a thrill to win,” he said afterwards. “Not so much for the money, but for the excitement of winning!”

Among the celebrity players taking part were snooker stars, Jimmy “Whirlwind” White, Ken Doherty and golfer Sam Torrence.

Smurfit has taken up Poker seriously since ‘retiring’ from packaging, having recently won a £50,000 tournament and competing in the Las Vegas World Series of Poker.
