|South Korea has pulled off a coup by co-hosting this summer’s FIFA World Cup soccer tournament, and now South Koreans have their first chance to bet on soccer online, through lottery firm Sports ToTo. According to Reuters, ”…Once registered with the site, people can pay by credit card online to place their bets on the result of a soccer or basketball game.”|
South Koreans have always loved a bet, but with more legalized outlets since last year, gambling is on the up. Betting at the country's two state controlled horse race tracks rose by more than 25% in the first half of the year, with bets on cycling increasing by 50% in the same period.
South Korea's first domestic casino, which opened late last year in a former coal-mining town, has also seen brisk business. The combination of World Cup fever this summer, with one of the world’s most Internet-literate populations (South Korea boasts the world’s highest penetration broadband Internet access, with 7.5 million users), means that online soccer betting will be huge this year.
