Speakeasy and Gambling Den for Teens Busted
By Earl
Two teenage boys have been arrested after running a ‘speakeasy’ and gambling den in a barn on Styer Road. More arrests may be made in the Downingtown area, though they might not come immediately.

Police speculate that the barn, which had had its windows covered up, had been used as a bar and gambling den by local high school students for the last several months. Just when it looked as if the two unlawful entrepreneurs were getting the place ready for a holiday party last Friday, the police swooped in. They found that the walls had been soundproofed. They also found more than 100 bottles of liquor, a keg of beer, a sink that was working, gaming tables, a stereo, a Ping-Pong table, and furniture. The two boys were charged with “the purchase, consumption, possession or transportation of liquor; selling or furnishing liquor to minors; sale of tobacco; furnishing cigarettes or cigarette papers; pool selling and bookmaking; and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities.”

Police are curious as to who else may have been involved, specifically, who bought the liquor for the 17-year-old (underaged) boys. The barn is owned by Alan W. Laffkas, who allowed the boys the use of the barn for a landscaping and firewood business they said they had. “But I wasn’t around much,” Laffkas said. He was not aware of the existence of the “speakeasy.”
