|Reality TV has become the mainstay of light entertainment but the non-scripted nature of the programming has at times left the door open for opportunistic scamsters to try rig betting on the outcomes of these shows.|
In the United Kingdom, hugely popular music talent show, X-Factor has been drawing massive last minute betting at online betting operator Betfair, who in turn became suspicious and contacted the police. Although Betfair has managed to freeze some of the winnings, £60,000 had already been withdrawn.
A spokesman for Betfair said, “We take very seriously the integrity of betting on our markets and have no hesitation contacting police when people may be betting fraudulently. The problem is that it's not certain what law has been broken but we have spoken to police and they are looking into it.”
The group of scamsters began by placing only small bets but those amounts grew as quickly as they kept winning. They also tried to hide their tracks by intentionally losing small amounts of money on other bets.
