Charity gambling night banned

A student-run ‘casino night’ held at a high school for 15 years to raise funds for the senior prom has been cancelled because New York officials have decided it violates gambling laws.

A spokeswoman for the Racing and Wagering Board said that because winners at the ‘casino night’ at Horace Greeley High School receive prizes, the event has to be governed by state gambling laws, which prohibits children from gambling. The Greeley event uses 11th graders to deal the cards and lets children as young as 9 years old participate.

Robbie Schlaff, a mother of three in Chappaqua, New York, urged the school board to find a way to get the event approved.
